Advances in preimplantation and prenatal testing are brought by a new patent just granted to REPROMEDA s.r.o. Its author is Mgr. Miroslav Horňák, Ph.D. The patented method significantly improves the diagnostic capabilities of chromosome disorders and aneuploidies.
The method allows you to determine whether trisomies (genetic defects where a chromosome is present in cells in three copies instead of two) detected in a sample from preimplantation or prenatal testing are of meiotic (arising during the development of sperm or egg) or mitotic (arising during early embryonic development) origin. The procedure is suitable for examining trisomy of any chromosome or multiple chromosomes with the exception of the Y chromosome.
It also allows you to detect triploidy (a condition where an embryo has three sets of chromosomes instead of two, one from the mother and one from the father).
The examination does not require the simultaneous examination of a sample from one or both parents, which is important for the organization of the examination and laboratory work.
The method is based on the finding that in meiotic trisomy or triploidy, chromosome segments have a higher value of heterozygosity and a lower frequency of homozygous DNA markers (this means that chromosomes have more different DNA segments than in the normal state).
The method is already successfully used in practice.
